Four local schoolboys returned from Bulgaria with world bronze medals.

Titus Morley and Callum Jones, from St Edward’s, and Charles Shaw and Thomas George, from Radley, were in the GB eight at the World Junior Championships in Plovdiv.

Coached by John Gearing, Radley’s chief coach, the GB crew reached their final direct from their first heat, and what a race it was.

Italy took and maintained a lead, but three crews – Germany, Romania and Britain – were locked in combat for the silver and bronze.

In a blanket finish behind Italy, Britain edged out Romania for third.

The Germans took silver, while less than one second covered the three crews.

Another local coach, Ryan Demaine from Headington School, was in charge of the GB women’s four.

They missed out on a final place by one position, but went on to battle with Poland and Canada, amongst others, in the B final, which they won, placing them seventh in the world.

Kathryn Twyman, of Wallingford RC, was selected as the GB Women’s lightweight sculler, a numerous event in the senior section of the regatta.

She reached the C Final and was fourth, placing her 16th in the world.

It was hot and humid at Oxford City’s two regattas. Oxford City Royal Regatta was held over 1,000 metres and the newer Sprint 500 metre Regatta took place a day later.

More than 300 races were staged on the Isis and 28 local wins were recorded.

David Fisher, chairman of both the Regatta and the City of Oxford club, was happy with the way everything went off.

“It was a very smooth weekend,” he said.

The City of Oxford club notched up seven wins over the two days, six of these in sculling disciplines.

The second most successful local clubs were Abingdon and Wallingford with five trophies apiece.

Oxford Academicals had a hat-trick of wins, all in eights.
