OXFORDSHIRE’S Olympians are relishing racing on home soil for the first time since London 2012 when they compete in Sunday’s Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix.

Hannah England and Lawrence Clarke will race in the 1,500m and 110m hurdles respectively at the sold-out Diamond League meeting.

Headlined by double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah, the event will offer home fans the chance to salute their heroes from the Games.

Oxford City athlete England will line up alongside fellow Brits Lisa Dobriskey and Laura Weightman, who both made the Olympic final.

England, 25, exited London 2012 at the semi-final stage as struggled to regain her sharpness after an Achilles injury.

But she showed she is making good progress by winning the 800m race at the Gugl Games in Linz, Austria on Monday.

Asked how she was feeling, England said: “I’m good thanks, just popped out an 800m PB last night! 1.59.66.

“I am now looking forward to running in Birmingham in the 1,500m.”

England’s time beat her previous mark of 1.59.94 set in 2009.

Clarke, from Christmas Common, will compete in a star-studded sprint hurdles headed by USA’s Olympic champion Aries Merritt.

The 22-year-old, who finished fourth at London 2012, also gets to race Jason Richardson (USA) and Hansle Parchment (Jamaica) – the Olympic silver and bronze medallist.

Clarke tweeted: “Can’t wait till the Aviva Birmingham Diamond League this weekend!”

The former Summer Fields School, Oxford pupil also raced in the Gugl Games, where he finished third in 13.45.

Clarke, who also ran 13.48 to finish fith at the DecaNation meeting in Albi, France last week, will hope the Birmingham crowd can spur him on to break his personal best of 13.31.

Also in action on Sunday is Radley’s Carolyn Plateau, who races in the On Camp With Kelly 800m.
