Oxford are boosted by the return of Cambridge Blue Jonno Evans for the crucial match at home to Welwyn Garden City tomorrow.

Still bottom of the Serious Cricket Premier League Premier Division following last week’s wash-out at Henley, Oxford need a victory to raise their hopes of avoiding relegation.

Evans, who played against Oxford in this year’s Varsity Match, replaces Dan King, who has struggled for runs this season.

He can also keep wicket but South African recruit Ryan Good will continue to wear the gloves. The other change sees Tom Geeson-Brown, who was unavailable last week, return to the side.

Oxford skipper Ian Crosby is in confident mood.

“We’ve lost only one of the last seven games, and for some reason Welwyn don’t like playing at Rover,” he said.

“We’ve never lost to them at home.

“I reckon we need two wins from the last five games to stay up.”

Last week’s early cancellation allowed several of the Oxford players to gain some much-needed time in the middle, playing for the second XI in the Cherwell League.

Jamie Perkin and Crosby, got runs, while Ian Evans, who will share the spinni ng duties with Shami Mendis, picked up some wickets. Perkin will continue to open the batting with Chris Sandbach, with Evans slotting into the middle order.

Banbury’s dramatic win over Potters Bar last week, keeps them in contention of reining in leaders High Wycombe.

“We can still catch them,” said Banbury vice-captain Jimmy Phillips.

“The top teams Wycombe and Tring play this week.

“ If that is a draw and we win, we’ll need only one more victory than Wycombe to overtake them.”

For tomorrow’s match at home to Henley, Ed Phillips comes in for the unavailable Jonny Cater, while Ollie Phillips, who has been bowling well in the second team, replaces young seamer Josh Megson.
