An inspired all-round display by Richard Kaufman spearheaded a determined fightback by Oxfordshire on the second day of their match against Western Division leaders Cornwall at Great Tew yesterday.

Kaufman followed a five-wicket spell with the ball in the Cornwall first innings of 339-7 with an unbeaten century as Oxon matched their opponents with a double-century opening partnership.

When a heavy storm during the tea interval ended play for the day, Oxon were on 208-0 in reply with a day left.

Cornwall resumed on 123-0 and openers Matt Robins and Jake Libby extended their opening stand to 202 before Robins departed to left-arm spinner Luke Ryan for 88.

Libby went on to score 139 before he fell the off-spin of Kaufman, having hit 11 fours and a six in his 242-ball innings.

In the chase for a fourth batting point, Cornwall lost quick wickets, the main beneficiary being Kaufman, who returned 5-81 from 16 overs.

Kaufman and opening partner Lloyd Sabin then feasted themselves on a superb batting pitch, racing to a century partnership at more than four runs per over against an innocuous attack.

Kaufman, who survived a hard chance to slip on 73, completed his century off just 111 balls and had reached 116 not out at the early close, having hit 18 fours in his 126-ball stay.

Sabin, who a gave a chance in the final over, was not out 84, having faced 145 balls with Oxon having reached 208-0.

The feat of both teams notching double-century opening stands in the same match had Minor Counties aficionados thumbing through their record books to see it had been achieved before.

Oxon lost the services of Charlie Kinghley, who suffered a suspected broken thumb while fielding and will take no further part in the match.

His substitute fielder, Paul White from Abingdon Vale, took a catch.
