Spinner Jimmy Phillips led the way as Banbury ended Division 1 leaders High Wycombe’s unbeaten record with an exciting 23-run win in the Serious Cruicket Home Counties Premier League at White Post Lane on Saturday.

The Oxfordshire side, who had suffered an agonising one-run defeat at Wycombe in May, made no mistake this time.

Phillips (pictured) took 5-71 as Wycombe, chasing 268, were bowled out for 244.

Wycombe still have a handsome 39-point lead, as Banbury stay third.

Choosing to bat first, Banbury were given a rousing starte as Lloyd Sabin and Ian Tew put on 178 for the first wicket.

Sabin was out for 77, but Tew went on to score 103 from 147 balls with 16 fours.

The innings went into rapid decline in the chase for quick runs with Banbury losing nine wickets for 89 runs before the enforced closure at 267-9 from 66 overs.

Young leg-spinner Rob-in Collins captured 5-66 while the more experienced left-armer Luke Beaven took 4-97 on a good day for spinners.

Wycombe seemed well in the hunt as long as former Surrey and Leicestershire player Jamie Benning was at the crease.

Benning made 78 from 82 balls before becoming Phillips’ second victim.

Phillips then spun his way through the lower order before sealing victory by clean bowling Chris Sketchley off the first ball of the 54th over, with still another half-hour of playing time available.
