DEBUTANT Cara Gainer starred as Oxfordshire Ladies finished fourth at County Week.

The Frilford Heath golfer won eight of her ten matches and had a 100 per cent record in the singles at Mentmore Golf Club in Bedfordshire.

Gainer’s efforts saw her earn county colours in just three days, while captain Annie Gowing and Kate Evans also attained their colours.

Kath O’Connor won her four matches and Laura Watkins also performed well, claiming victories in all her foursomes.

They helped Oxon to victories against Berkshire (7-2) and Warwickshire (5.5-3.5).

The depleted team also halved their tie against second-placed Northamptonshire (4.5-4.5).

But their challenge for the title was halted by defeats to eventual champions Buckinghamshire (6-3) and Worcester & Herefordshire (5.5-3.5), who finished third.

Gowing said: “The standard of golf was amazing and every single player in the team played well – I was so proud of their performance and determination to win. “The team spirit was excellent throughout.”

Next year’s event is on home soil, when Frilford Heath will host.
