Peter Wood, from Oxford, won a title in the regional finals of the Honda RYA Youth Rib Championship at Queen Mary Sailing Club, near Staines.
The 16-year-old, an RYA sailing instructor, took the honours in the 13-16 age group, and said he was “surprised and very happy” to win the event at his first attempt.
He finished just ahead of runner-up George Galloway (Windsor), who in turn was just a second clear of Kieran Sibley (Albany Park).
Wood, who qualified in regional heats at the Oxford District School Sailing Association, will miss out on the national finals as he and his family are moving to Spain before the event.
The series is a national championship in which 8-16 year old RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) drivers can demonstrate their skills against the clock.
