Craig Haupt became the first batsman to score 8,000 runs in the Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League during Banbury’s tight Division 1 draw at home to Potters Bar.

The burly left-hander top-scored with 60 off 74 balls in Banbury’s 234-7, while the visitors replied with 220-9.

Haupt’s 50th league half-century – he also has 21 hundreds to his name – was a valuable one as Banbury chose to bat first in seamer-friendly conditions.

He held the early part of the innings together before Richard West and Ed Phillips helped rally them from 127-5 to set a good target.

Phillips was brought into the side following the elbow injury which sidelined skipper Ian Hawtin.

Jonny Cater took over Hawtin’s keeping duties. Potters Bar got off to a flying start thanks, led by opener Anrony Keely and, at 142-1, were firm favourites.

But they then lost six wickets for 22 runs against the seam of Ashley Blanchard and spin of acting captain Jimmy Phillips.

The visitors rallied, but Banbury still had hopes of victory when taking the ninth wicket, but the last pair played out the final three overs to secure a draw.
