CHERWELL LEAGUE

Match of the day

A MEDIOCRE fielding performance followed by some loose batting sent Abingdon Vale to a disappointing 61-run defeat at home to promoted Twyford in Division 2.

The visitors got off to a flying start, Zawar Hussain (44) hitting Graham Charlesworth out of the attack almost immediately by smashing three sixes in the opening three overs.

Vale fought back well through experienced left-arm spinner Paul White to leave Twyford with a total of 197-7, which looked about par on a decent pitch.

The home side's weaknesses were then exposed after tea, principally by Twyford's own spin merchant.

Bilal Afzal bowled well for his 5-40, but Vale’s batsmen did not help themselves by selling their wickets cheaply after taking the trouble to play themselves in.

This is Vale’s 20th season since their formation from a merger between the old Abingdon and North Abingdon clubs, and their first team has spent almost every year in the second division – and none in the top flight.

They have some work to do if they are going to improve on this record.
