A LATE fourish with the bat from Ryan Newhook secured Shipton-under-Wychwood a thrilling last- over victory at Harefield on Saturday.

With nine runs needed from the final over, Newhook struck two fours and a single to secure a two-wicket success with just one ball to spare.

The result maintained Shipton’s dream start to life in Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League Division 2 West.

After having their first match abandoned, they have won twice and stand second in the table.

After ch-osing to bat Harefield got off to a flying start scoring 30 runs off the first six overs, with Newhook unusually expensive.

Instead, it was the seam of Johnny Gurney and left-arm spin of Shaun Miller that kept the run-rate in check in fast-scoring conditions.

Gurney claimed 4-76 and Miller 3-62 as Harefield were limited to 215-7 off their 60 overs.

Shipton’s reply got off to a slow start, with a rate of little more than two runs per over for the first 18.

Ross Barrett and skipper Simon Hole added 84 for the second wicket.

Hole held the innings together, his 70 coming off just 78 balls with ten fours.

When he was out, Tim Senior and Chris Oliver kept up the chase, but Shipton still needed 27 from the final three overs.

As the wickets fell, Newhook came to the rescue with his final flourish.
