Substitute Aaron Woodley scored a late winner as Oxford City moved up to second in the Premier Division table with a 1-0 victory at Chippenham on Saturday.

With the sides locked at 0-0 with ten minutes to go, it looked as if City would have to settle for a draw.

But City’s on-loan Oxford United striker Woodley netted the winner.

It saw City complete their sixth double of the season and move them to within four points of leaders Brackley and with a game in hand.

Although the clash was by no means a classic it saw a determined City make it three wins in a week.

Mike Ford’s side were out of the blocks quickly, forcing a succession of corners in the opening 15 minutes, but without getting any reward.

The home side gradually came more into the contest, though City looked dangerous on the break.

City should have taken the lead when defender James Clarke’s cross found Steve Basham, but he was unable to put the chance away.

After the break, a cross from Chippenham’s Alan Griffin fizzed across goal, but it eluded all of his colleagues.

City were still pressing for the winner and ten minutes from time it duly arrived.

A long kick from keeper Jason Mooney was expertly controlled by substitute Woodley, before the young striker chipped the ball over the onrushing Jason Matthews.

Late on, City had a let off when Chippenham substitute Ross Stearn could only hit an unpright, with the loose ball being cleared away to safety as City held on for victory.
