ALAN Crossley has resigned as Oxfordshire’s chairman of selectors with immediate effect.

The 70-year-old former county wicket-keeper and right-handed batsman had held the post for eight years, having been involved with Oxon for 43 years.

Crossley, who played for Oxfordshire from 1969-89, said: ‘‘I have never found my work for the county team a chore, but rather a pleasure and a privilege, particularly in the last couple of years when things seem to have really come together.

“Not only have I enjoyed watching some great cricket, but also have had the satisfaction (and excitement) of seeing a young team learning to compete on even terms with the strongest opponents, playing in the right spirit, and above all enjoying themselves.’’ Crossley, who made his debut against Bucks, played 161 Minor Counties Championship matches, nine MCCA Knockout Trophy games and nine List A matches.

After retiring from Minor Counties cricket, he continued his involvement with Oxfordshire in a variety of roles including committee member, team secretary, selector and chairman of selectors.

Head of cricket Rupert Evans said: “I would like to wholeheartedly thank Alan for his involvement with Oxfordshire cricket over the years.

“Alan was a good player, a fully committed selector and a great ambassador for Oxfordshire cricket.

“I hope to see Alan wandering round the boundary edge continuing his support for the ‘team’ at some point during the season.”

Crossley’s resignation leaves Evans and captain Ian Hawtin as the two remaining selectors.

And Evans added: “The subject of finding another selector will be discussed at the cricket management team meeting on April 2.

“However, for the foreseeable future the Minor Counties and second teams will be selected by the captain and me.”
