THREE clonking chub of over 5lb were the feature of the Kidlington AS Open on the Cherwell.

A good turnout of 20 anglers found the river at Branson’s Meadows very low and clear, which coupled with the sunny weather, meant bites were at a premium.

Winner Dave Britnell (Kidlington) triumphed with 8.0.9, comprising a chub of 5.2.0 and two perch caught on the bomb with worm.

Second-placed Bill Burnell, also from Kidlington, had only one bite, but it turned out to be from a 5.9.0 chub, which fell to maggot-feeder.

Clanfield’s Steve Heath captured a 5.7.8 chub on legered worm for third.

Tackley Estates AC were on the Oxford Canal at the Rock of Gibralter for their Last Chance Shield.

Neville Edwards took top spot with 5.3.0 of bream and perch on pole on worm and maggot.

Bleak and skimmers on pole-fished maggot gave Anthony Alder second place with 4.7.0, followed by Stephen Malone with 2.13.0 of bleak on pinkie and maggot.

Mark Pollard won Wednesday’s match at Oakfield with carp to 5lb, while 14 carp to 4lb earned Gary Keetley top spot on Saturday with a total of 32.10.8.
