THE students came out on top of their city counterparts in the annual Town v Gown match at the University Sports Centre, Iffley Road.

City’s men pipped Oxford University 6-4 in the first-team contest, but the Gown claimed the men’s second and ladies’ matches.

With the city and the university locked at 4-4 after the singles, it went to the last point of the final doubles match before City could edge home in the top contest.

Eddie Herrity beat university No 1 Jingyu Sun in a five-set thriller, while Tony Stead saw off No 2 Wilson Chen.

Glen Freeman and Jon Abungan both beat No 4 Xi Geng to make it 4-4.

The university won the men’s seconds match 8-2, with Lewis Sumner and Chris Hawkes defeating David Fudge for city’s only wins.

It was 6-4 to the university in the ladies’ match, with Kristelle Brook and Chloe Yau winning singles for city.
