Didcot Town manager Dave Mudge has released their former Premiership striker Paul Robinson and coach Michael Butcher.

The ex-Newcastle striker, 33, joined the Railwaymen in November, but left the club following last week’s 2-0 midweek defeat by Halesowen which Mudge described as their worst display since he became boss of the Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West outfit.

Sunderland-born Robinson, 33, signed for the Magpies in 1998 before joining Wimbledon for around £1.5m in 2000.

Robinson was famously selected by manager Ruud Gullit ahead of Alan Shearer in a 2–1 home defeat by Sunderland which saw Gullit sacked.

Following the Halesowen loss, Mudge had hinted changes would be made to the squad and management structure.

Meanwhile, Mudge has hailed the signing of left-sided midfielder Chris Owens from AFC Hayes.

Mudge was delighted to sign Owens.

“He’s been a big part of AFC Hayes’s success in Southern League Midland Division.”

He was not signed in time for tonight’s trip to Tiverton Town, though Lee Henderson returns to the squad after suspension.

Mudge said he would be naming the same squad that lost 3-0 at Poole Town on Saturday.

That included youngsters Ryan Tappin, who made his debut, Jack Bernasconi and Harry Halls.

Mudge added: “I thought the three young lads did well and at this stage of the season, I intend to keep up that policy.

“But I won’t be chucking them all in. You have to get the balance right.”
