Cup round-up

HARWELL are just two wins from Twickenham after a 69-5 victory at Berkshire Shire Hall in the Southern Counties Junior Vase final.

The 11-try demolition earned Harwell a home tie with Gloucestershire’s Brockworth in the national competition’s South West final on March 17.

Harwell’s first two tries, from wingers Joe Pigott and Gavin Wilde, came against the run of play after kicks ahead. Both were converted by fly half Andy Lee.

Pigott added his second after a break from Lee, who grabbed one for himself for a 24-0 half-time lead.

Wilde and Lee both scored second tries, with Dave Beaven adding a conversion.

Shire Hall got a deserved try to make it 36-5, but were punished as they tired.

Captain Carl Tappin, flanker Kev Wood, Sam Froud-Davis, centre Jamie Cantwell and replacement winger Matt Rushden all touched down, Froud-Davis converting three and Beaven one.

Grove suffered a 20-15 defeat at home to Windsor after extra time in a card-strewn Southern Counties Intermediate Cup final.

Fly half Dave Maryon kicked Grove ahead with a penalty, while they wasted a great chance by not finding Guy Nicholl.

Replacement Roger Sevier took over the kicking duties in the second half and slotted a penalty after Windsor prop Charlie Herd was sin-binned.

Tries from centres Pat Birch and Jack Graves, the latter converted by full back James Driscoll, put Windsor 12-6 ahead before Sevier struck a second penalty.

Windsor had No 8 Simon Evans sin-binned.

Sevier’s third penalty levelled it, while Windsor had a pushover try disallowed and hooker John Davy sin-binned.

Another Sevier penalty made it 15-12, but wing Alex Porter equalised with a penalty from half-way with the final kick.

An extra-time try from Driscoll sealed it for Windsor, who saw lock Dom Klieren red-carded.

Chipping Norton lost 27-19 at home to Drifters in the Southern Counties Senior Vase final.
