Berinsfield’s Ronan Wadley won through to today’s semi-finals of National Schoolboys Championships with an impressive points success at Kidlington on Sunday.

The southpaw delivered one of the best performances of his career against highly-fancied West Ham prospect Joe Walder in the quarter-finals.

Wadley now faces Western Counties champion Said Eltuyev in the last four of the class 2 (14 years and under) 42kg category at Feltham Community College in West London.

The Berinsfield youngster employed the perfect tactics from the bell, letting his opponent come to him and countering with precise right hands.

And the plan had the desired effect with Wadley in the lead after two rounds.

Walder rallied in the final round, but this effort could not erode the deficit and Wadley was through to the last four.

Berinsfield clubmate Ciaran Flanagan battled bravely in his class 3 (born 1997) 44kg quarter final against London champion Billy Beanny from Reach ABC – a beaten finalist 12 months ago.

Despite lacking the height to match his rival, the Oxfordshire teenager refused to be intimidated and maintained his momentum for three entertaining rounds. But Beanny’s greater accuracy proved decisive in the outcome – a points decision in his favour.

Windrush Valley’s involvement with the championships came to end at Kidlington as both of their boxers involved in the class 3 (15 years and under) category bowed out.

Tommy Lee Connors faced a formidable task by tackling West Ham’s Charlie Kenny – who is bidding for his third successive schoolboy title this year – in the 52 kg category.

The brave Connors could not match his rival’s power and precision and was halted early in the clash. And, despite an encouraging start, Jake James Ianson succumbed to the superior firepower of Tottenham rival Prince Abanihi in their 70 kg clash.

He was stunned by a five-punch cluster – that prompted a standing count – and the corner promptly retired him.
