youngsters from Cheney School won three individual golds and triumphed in both team events at the Oxford inter-school indoor rowing event at Wheatley Park School.

Tom Placidi took the honours in the boys’ under 13 competition for the school, who compete under the Cheney Falcon Olympic Rowing Club banner.

Alice Roberts came out on top in the under 14 girls’ contest, and Rebecca Moody was the best under 16 girl.

Their efforts also led Cheney to success in the team competitions at the event for under 12 to 16-year-olds.

Manufacturers Concept2 provided 100 ‘ERG’ indoor-rowing machines for the day, which helped raise funds for hosts Wheatley Park, through sponsorship of the competitors.

The Cheney pupils’ new rowing club, which was created only last summer, boats near Donnington Bridge on the Isis, from parent club Falcon Rowing Club, from which they take their name.

Their ten volunteer Oxford coaches work with head coach Peter Haining, a three-times lightweight world champion single sculler.

They have also been rowing outdoors this winter with four crews competing at the Monmouth Head of the River Wye in December.
