Oxford United striker Jon-Paul Pittman says he is hoping that he and new signing Scott Rendell can recreate the same magic they had at Wycombe when he has recovered from his hamstring injury.

Rendell, who has signed on loan until the end of the season from the Chairboys, scored 19 goals for Buckinghamshire outfit last season, with Pittman weighing in with four as Gary Waddock’s side sealed a place in League One.

The duo were set to link up last weekend for the match against Barnet, but that was frozen off and with Pittman suffering his hamstring injury on Monday, it means that it could be March before they play in the same side.

“Scott certainly scored a few goals and I was there chipping in,” said Pittman. “It helps that I know how he plays so I know where I need to be.

“I had a decent partnership with him – we used to play three up front then, so it shouldn’t be too different.

“I know Scott’s used to playing as a central striker or as part of a pair. So I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

And Pittman said it would be great if they could transfer the success they had a Wycombe to Oxford.

Pittman added: “I got two promotions there – to be fair we scraped it both times – the first time by a point and the other one by a goal.

“But we still managed to do it and they certainly have a strong enough team here to do it.”

Rendell, who scored one of Wycombe’s goals in the 2-2 draw at the Kassam Stadium last season, said: “J-P is a top lad and he’s doing well now, which I’m glad about because he’s a top-class striker.

“Hopefully, we can both play together, but there are obviously other strikers here. It’s good competition and that’s all you can ask for.”

Meanwhile, Pittman said it was important that the frontline started to find the net on a regular basis.

He added: “The build-up play is very important and helping your team our defensively, but ultimately you are judged on goals, so it’s important as a forward unit that we start sticking them in.”
