A CRACKING net of fish caught by Chris Webb saw him take Littlemore AC’s Classic Flooring Shield at Stable Lake, Kirtlington.

With temperatures dropping to below freezing overnight, getting the fish to feed was always going to be hard for the 11 anglers, but the winner had no such problem.

He had several small carp on the pole with meat, plus 20lb of small skimmers on maggot to take top spot with an impressive 42.5.0.

Brian Hutchings fished the straight lead with worm and maggot and had five small carp for a second-placed 16.9.0, followed by Vernon Adams with two late carp on the feeder and worm for 13.13.0.

A good field of 24 anglers gathered for the Kidlington AS Hillier Championship, which included eight from Clanfield AC.

The Cherwell was nicely coloured, which had the fish on the feed.

Jan Tebula must have thought it wasn’t going to be his day when he lost three fish in a row at the start before one stayed on the hook.

But he stuck at it, catching three chub on pole and lobworm, the best going 4.6.0, for a winning 8.8.8.

The others had to scratch around and 1.10.0 was enough for Giles Cuss to take second place with a bag of bits on pole and maggot.

A few dace on maggot-feeder worth 0.11.0 gave Jim Martin third spot.

Points after 18 matches: 1 J Bean 114, 2 T Lester 99, 3 H Clarke 77, 4 G Cuss 64.

There was a noted absence of small fish in North Oxford’s latest match on the Oxford Canal at Walton Well Road, fished by nine anglers.

Roger Brown had one good bream and some perch on worm for 5.13.0, while three nice perch gave Mike Watson second place with 4.5.0.

Andy Crisp also had three perch on green maggot for 4.3.0 and third.

It was a similar story on the Thame at Drayton, where 12 contested Cuddedson Mill’s pairs match.

Chub dominated as Tony Sexton and Mick Harding took the honours with 6.3.0 on feeder, bread and worm.

Mick Baker and Trevor Cantwell were runners-up with 5.5.0 thanks to a single chub caught by Mick, who also lost four other good fish from under a rubbish raft in his swim.
