Lakeside BDO World Championships

OXFORDSHIRE star Deta Hedman went for an early night after reaching the Women’s World Championship final.

Hedman saw off Lorraine Farlam 2-1 last night in a tense battle that went down to the final leg, which she clinched with double tops at the third attempt.

The No 1 seed will play Russia’s Anastasia Dobromyslova in today’s final at 5pm, with the match shown live on the BBC website and via their red button service.

Hedman was exhausted by her efforts, so retired to bed to rest up ahead of the biggest match of her life.

Her partner Paul James said: “She has dreamt for years and years of getting to this stage.

“It was so tense out there and there was a lot of nervous energy.

“She has had so many good wishes and I had 125 text messages on my phone, many of them from Oxfordshire people.”

Oxfordshire team manager Graham Manning said: “It is fantastic news. She really deserves it.

“Deta has been world No 1 for a couple of years . Everyone in Oxfordshire will be routing for her.”

Hedman took the first set on her throw, with Buxton’s Farlam hitting back to level.

The Oxon ace went 2-0 up in the deciding set, only to be pegged back.

It was nip and tuck in the fifth leg until Hedman fired in a 180 to leave double tops which she clinched with her third attempt, producing the top average of the women’s tournament 26.37.

Dobromyslova saw off defending champion and former Oxfordshire resident Trina Gulliver 2-0 in the other semi-final.
