JAMIE Gibson could yet force his way into the senior England squad after retaining his place in the Saxons ranks.

The 21-year-old Oxford University student and London Irish flanker was yesterday named in a 32-man Saxons squad for the forthcoming A internationals.

Gibson’s call-up comes after he has established himself as Irish’s first-choice openside flanker – while studying for a degree in Classics.

And he will be further encouaraged by England head coach Stuart Lanacaster’s words that players in both squads have been selected with the 2015 World Cup in England in mind.

“We are very excited by the make-up of the two squads,” said Lancaster.

“Lots of players have been putting their hands up and there were some tough calls to make.

“However, in line with the selection philosophy about starting a new era for English rugby, we have taken the chance to make changes and give players opportunities to be part of the journey towards 2015.

“We very much see this as a group of 64, with opportunities for the Saxons playing in the forthcoming A internationals to come into the senior squad at any time.”

By committing himself to playing for London Irish during Oxford University term time, Gibson turned down the chance to win a Blue.

  • OXFORD University will elect their new captain to succeed John Carter on Friday, January 20.

The successful candidate will lead the Dark Blues at Twickenham in December when they will seek a third successive Varsity Match triumph.
