HENLEY Hawks were made to work hard for a 29-20 victory at Clifton which keeps them in the promotion chase.

Hawks, for whom Oxford University lock Karl Outen shone on his debut, roared into a 12-0 lead after ten minutes.

Scrum half Jonah Holmes forced his way over for fly half James Comben to convert, then wing Christoph Bart bagged his fourth try in three matches.

Clifton fought back, with No 8 John Levis and scrum half Matt Britton going over, the latter converted by fly half Gareth Knox.

Knox and Comben traded penalties before half-time, but Hawks’ pack then took charge.

Outen’s line-out catch led to prop Alex Penny being driven over, then centre Alex Cheesman crossed over, Comben converting both.

Replacement prop Will Davis grabbed a late Clifton try.
