Chipping Norton trainer Charlie Longsdon beat his previous best number of winners in a National Hunt season when Ravastree won at Southwell yesterday – but it came at a cost.

The six-year-old gelding pulled up lame with a fractured off-fore cannon bone following his 15-length success under Paddy Brennan in the handicap chase over an extended three miles, which brought Longsdon’s tally for the campaign to 45.

He was taken to Newmarket where the vets were due to operate last night.

Longsdon, whose stable star Hidden Keel was put down at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day, said: “It really was very unfair on poor Ravastree.

“He jumped so well and won the race like the good horse we know he is.

“Now he will be out of action for a long time and it will not be a straghtforward task in getting him back to the racecourse.”
