Kennington Club are now two points clear at the top of the Johnsons Buildbase Oxford League Premier Section after a double success, writes PETE EWINS.

Playing their game in hand, they beat Masons B 3-2 and also won 4-1 at home to Democrats, who stay top of Section 1.

Steven Sheard (14,030, break 10,280) and Kevin Godfrey (4,510) took the opening two legs against Democrats.

Billy Hill (5,000) pulled it back to 2-1, but then Pauline Withey (6,920), who recently won the Ladies Grand Prix in Reading, and Ian Gordon, who rattled up 13,300 – including breaks of 6,900 and 6,400 – completed victory.

Vikings Club kept up their challenge with a 5-0 home whitewash over Masons A.

Ian Moss (12,370, break 10,130), Lewis Stratford, Alan Oliver (8,040, break 7,300) and Alan Lacey (12,180, 6,000) were to the fore.

Marlborough Club are one point clear at the top of Section 2 after a 3-2 home win over second-placed Gladiators Club A.

Arthur McIntyre (5,760), Chris Iagoe (4,710) and Chris Bateman (7,190) starred for Marlborough, with Malcolm Lee (2,470) and Keith Gardner, whose 8,130 included the highest away break this season of 4,930, replying.

Headington Conservative Club’s Sid Ponting posted the highest away break in Section 3 with 5,430 in his 8,000 as his side went down 3-2 at Section 3 leaders Gladiators Club B.
