Frank Marulanda said that he was “simply overwhelmed” to win the unsung hero award at the 2011 Oxfordshire Sports Awards.

The basketball coach has almost single-handedly transformed the fortunes of Oxford Hoops.

Under Marulanda’s leadership, the club has gone from having just 20 players in 2000 to 150 members last year, and last year won five county titles.

“To even have a basketball club is just amazing,” he said.

“I am simply overwhelmed to win this award, but it shouldn’t just be me receiving it – there are many other people without whom the club just wouldn’t run.

“This is just such an honour not for me, but for basketball, because there are some absolutely unbelievable people at these awards and I just think that everyone in Oxford should be so proud of all the people here – it’s an amazing city full of amazingly talented people.”
