Wantage Town live to fight another day following a 2-2 draw after extra time away to Alton Town in a pulsating FA Carslberg Vase second-round tie on Saturday.

The reigning Hellenic League champions thought that they had done enough to secure the victory in normal time.

Danny Keen’s well-taken penalty in the 48th minute, after David Bostock had been floored in the box, appeared to be sufficient to win the tie.

But in the fifth minute of time added on, the home side equalised.

Wantage captain Tom Rowe was deemed to have handled the ball, as he attempted to clear.

Alton captain Ian Humble converted the spot-kick to take the tie into extra-time.

The first period of extra time followed the pattern of the first 90 minutes, with the Wessex League side making the running, and Wantage being restricted to a few breakaways.

Four minutes into the second period, Alton took the lead, Mark Clothier driving the ball home through a crowd of players To their enormous credit, having been set back twice at crucial points in the game, Wantage rallied again, even though they were now effectively reduced to ten men as Mark Threlfall was carrying an injury.

With five minutes left, they moved the ball forward to Keen, who steered it past Alton keeper Craig Atkinson to secure a replay at Alfredian Park tomorrow night.

Old Woodstock Town struck three times in the last 15 minutes to win 4-3 at home to Witney Town in a thrilling west Oxfordshire derby on Friday.

Witney were left kicking themselves, having twice built two-goal leads.

The visitors led 2-0 thanks to two first-half strikes from Andrew Younie.

Woodstock replied in the 39th minute, when Gavin Kidd turned the ball into the net from a Murray Nichols free-kick.

The game looked all over for Woodstock in the first minute of the second half when Younie completed his hat-trick.

On the hour, home manager Eddie Nix brought on forwards Marley Joseph and Dan Green, which caused Witney problems at the back.

The revival started in the 75th minute when Danny Bone made it 3-2 following a goalmouth scramble.

Woodstock equalised in the 86th min-ute when Nichols fired home directly from a free-kick.

The teams were looking at an extra 30 minutes, but Woodstock continued to attack, and unlucky Witney defender Ian Lovegrove deflected the ball into his own net in injury time to settle the tie.
