Abingdon United paid severely for missing an early penalty as they slumped to a disastrous 4-0 home defeat against fellow Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West strugglers Clevedon Town.

In the first minute, Abingdon were awarded a penalty after Sam Packer was pulled back inside the area, but Sam Collier smashed the spot-kick against the bar.

Twenty minutes later, Abingdon’s Matt Biddle only had to tap the ball over the line, but failed to connect.

Clevedon made Abingdon rue their misses on the half-hour as Charlie Rich’s shot took a deflection and clipped the underside of the bar and dropped over the line.

The visitors made it 2-0 early in the second half when Ashley Kington fired in a low short on the turn.

To add to Abingdon’s misery Jack Smith was sent off for kicking out in frustration as he lay on the ground after being hit accidentally in the face by the ball.

With ten men, Abingdon could not prevent Clevedon adding further goals from Lloyd Mills and Chas Hemmings.
