Andy Whing says that Oxford United’s players are all desperate to get the Sheffield United defeat out of their system.

But the defender says that they know that there are few tougher places to try and do that than Crawley.

While the U’s were not expected to win at Bramall Lane last week, it was the manner of their 3-0 defeat that hurt boss Chris Wilder the most.

With a massive away following of almost 2,500 supporters, a lacklustre performance saw United on the end of a one-sided result.

And Whing, who was one of the better performers on the day, says that all the players knew that the display was not good enough.

“The manager didn’t really have to say anything after the Sheffield United game,” Whing admitted.

“We all knew the performance wasn’t good enough.

“But we came in on Monday morning, we said a few home truths and now we move on.

“We have got a great bunch of honest lads in the dressing room, but we are all fierecly determined to put things right.

“You have to keep the Saturday game at the back of your mind, but the most important game is the next one.”

Whing says that going to Crawley is going to be a massive challenge for United, but one that they are relishing.

“Crawley are flying at the moment,” he said. “They had a great result in the FA Cup last week so will be brimming with confidence, are on their own patch, and will be expecting to win the game.

“But Saturday was a kick up the backside for us and we have had a great week’s training and are looking forward to it.”

As well as the team looking to push on, Whing, who has played in a variety of positions, is hoping to do the same.

“It’s been stop and start for me since I came here to be honest,” he said.

“I have been ill a couple of times which hasn’t helped, but it gives you a bit of confidence when the manager gives you the nod like at Sheffield “It’s a string to the bow a bit being able to play in different positions, but I would like to just play in the one position, get a bit of confidence and rhythm there.

“Having said that, I will play whereever I am asked to.”
