The Banbury-based Mini WRC team put their bold showing in the RACC Rally de Espana down to an inspired choice of tyres at the start of the final day.

Drivers Dani Sordo and Kris Meeke finished fourth and fifth in their Mini John Cooper Works WRC as reigning champion Sebastien Loeb took victory.

The team’s weather forecast showed rain was expected later in the day, and so they chose to ignore what the other works teams were doing and opt for the appropriate Michelin tyres.

Technical director Dave Wilcock said: “We were on the right tyre at the right time. Credit has to go to Michelin for the durable tyre, because even with the soft tyre on the drying stages it was not that bad.”
