There was disappointment as Oxfordshire’s final three contenders in the Clubs for Young People (CYP) Championships bowed out of at the quarter-final stage in Bristol.

George Stevens, 16, set the pace to claim the opening session in his welterweight clash with the vastly more experienced and previous winner Ryan Martin.

But the Swindon boxer – an English international – edged ahead in the second half of the contest to book his place in the semi-finals.

Bradley Townsend, 15, also started briskly against switch-hitter Rees Busse, from Bristol, in their lightweight clash.

But the Witney teenager (pictured) was unable to maintain the momentum and lost on points.

Light-middleweight Ben Kaluza, 17, was the unluckiest of the Oxford Boxing Academy trio.

He upended Launceston rival Wesley Smith with a precise and powerful left hook in the third session of their four-round clash.

Kaluza had dominated the final two periods, but it was not enough to overcome the early lead of his taller Cornish rival, who prevailed on the computerised scoring system by the slimmest of margins.

  • Berinsfield’s Michael McDonagh, 15, secured a polished points success over Michael Crawley from the host club, in a boxing show at Triumph gym in Coventry.

McDonagh proved too slick on the counter throughout this fast-paced contest with precise shots from both fists to head and body to gain a convincing victory.
