OXFORD Golf Club will officially replace Southfield on Saturday as the home of men’s and ladies’ golf in the city.

This will be the new name for the course nestled between Headington and Cowley that hosts the Oxford City and Oxford Ladies clubs.

“It is surprising that people who live in the heart of Oxford don’t know that Southfield is here,” said Colin Whittle, who is secretary and manager of both clubs.

Both clubs will continue to exist separately, but Whittle said the new name should help raise the course’s profile.

He added: “There was a lot of pressure to get this change done this year.

“It is the same golf course and great designer. It is just the name that has changed. Hopefully, it will be a good move.”

  • OXFORDSHIRE’S ladies won the regional Inter-County Seniors Team Championship after a dominant display on Frilford Heath’s Red Course.

Annie Gowing, Kate Evans, Angela Reeves and Judy McCairns, all Frilford members, used their local knowledge to full effect against ten teams from the south east.

Gowing and Reeves carded rounds of 80, while Evans shot a 77 to complete a total of 237, with three scores to count. Sussex finished second on 245.

McCairns had to withdraw due to injury after nine holes.

  • GRAHAM Fullagar aced the same hole for the second time in six months as he won Kirtlington’s Midweek Stableford with 42 points Fullagar holed-in-one on the par three fourth.

Three North Oxford members have added to their club’s incredible tally of aces in 2011.

Roger Beesley bagged a hole-in-one with a driver on the 180-yard sixth and John Thorne notched one with a five-iron on the 156-yard second.

Geoff White aced the 133-yard 11th using an eight-iron for the second time this year.
