PAUL Fernandez, of Abingdon Amblers, led England to the team silver medal in the Commonwealth Ultra Distance Championships in Anglesey on Sunday.

Fernandez completed the 55K trail race in seventh place in a time of 3hrs 42mins 43secs and was the first of the English team home.

After the race, a delighted Fernandez said: “I was only four-and-a-half minutes from getting an individual bronze medal.

“I was especially pleased as, before the race I was expecting to come in somewhere near the back of the field.

“I had only once ever beaten one of the other four men in the England team.”
