Thame Utd 2

(Meredith pen 65, Rogers 89)

Brackley Tn 0

Thame United caused a shock by dumping out Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division club Brackley Town in the FA Cup first qualifying round at the ASM Stadium.

Brackley started the better with their pace out wide causing problems for the Thame defence, but they could not find a way past in-form keeper Nick Bennion.

The Uhlsport Hellenic League hosts came more into the match, with Alex Stewart posing a real threat, well supported by Ben Connelly, but neither side could break the deadlock.

The second half began with Brackley twice hitting the woodwork.

It was then Thame’s turn to hit a post when Matt Hall’s 25-yard free-kick thudded against an upright.

But the home side ended the stalemate in the 65th minute. Hall’s low cross from the left was met on the half volley by Stewart, whose first-time effort ricocheted off a defenders arm and, with the referee well placed, a penalty was awarded.

Mitchell Meredith calmly slotted the spot-kick home.

Brackley pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but time and again found Bennion in superb form.

And Thame sealed victory a minute from time following a breakaway attack.

A defender reached the ball first, and passed back to keeper Joe Murrell, but his clearance went straight to Aaron Rogers, who scored from close range to leave the home support in raptures.

Thame Utd: Bennion, Willett, Meredith, Brown (Steedman), Rhodes, Hayes, Connelly, West, Stewart (MacDonald), Rogers, Ricketts (Hall).

Attendance: 216.
