Mickey Lewis is full of praise for Adam Chapman’s attitude in his first week back at the club.

The Oxford United midfielder returned to the club on Monday, having served more than 14 months in a young offenders institution.

Chapman was sentenced in June 2010 for causing death by dangerous driving.

But the club stood by the former Sheffield United man, extending his contract by a year so that he could rejoin the U’s on his release.

And United’s assistant manager said that the player has done everything right over the past few days.

“Adam is back, and it’s all been pretty low-profile to be honest,” Lewis said.

“He has come in and just kept his head down.

“We are all delighted to have him back and he’s obviously delighted to be back.”

Chapman’s return means that United will have a No 7 shirt worn again.

After securing promotion back into the Football League, the absence of Chapman saw the club hold the number for his return.

But Lewis says that he will need time and play some games before he gets close to a first-team return.

“Adam just wants to get on with it,” he said.

“He was pretty fit, but obviously needs some games under his belt.

“It’s hard to judge at this stage how far he’s off, we’ll have to just keep looking at him over the next few weeks to see.”
