Alfie Potter says that Oxford United are determined to get back to winning ways against Burton on Saturday.

And the winger says that he has more reason than most for wanting to ensure the U’s pick up three points.

Potter had a number of good chances in last week’s 3-1 defeat at Crewe, and says that he knows he should be scoring more goals.

A superb pre-season that saw the winger net in United’s first three friendly games meant that Potter went into the new campaign full of confidence in front of goal.

But while he says he knows he is capable of finding the net more often, he is frustrated at his lack of goals this season.

“I know that I should have had a few goals last week,” he admitted.

“The overall team performance wasn’t too bad – we created a lot of chances, but should have done better with them.

“I scored a few in pre-season, but need to start scoring some in the league now.

“When I did interviews in pre-season I said then that hopefully the goals don’t stop when the season starts, but I’ve not scored so far which is obviously disappointing.

“Once one goes in I’m sure more will follow.”

Potter said he almost shocked himself at Crewe, coming close to a goal with his head.

“I was surprised with that one,” he smiled.

“It came across and I just closed my eyes and headed it.

“It was a good save, but I should have done better with some of the chances I had.”

The former Havant & Waterlooville man says that he has been working extra hard on finishing in training this week, and is desperate to take his graft into tomorrow’s match.

“There’s no team in this league that’s a pushover, but we are confident in our ability,” he said.

“We have been working hard in training – I’ve been doing a lot of finishing, and hopefully if I get a chance on Saturday I will get that first goal.”

And a home game with a big crowd means that there is no better time to put it right.

“It’s always a great crowd at home and the boys are looking forward to putting on a good display,” he said.

“The fans have always been great, and all of the lads appreciate them so much.

“They were brilliant at Crewe on Saturday, but we couldn’t give them the result, so we want to make sure we do on Saturday.”
