Oxford United’s players faced a totally different challenge this week when their culinary skills were put to the test.
Seven squad members were put through their paces as they took on a ‘Thrill of the Grill’ challenge.
After signing a sponsorship deal with the club, the Weber Grill Academy, based in Marsh Baldon, invited the U’s to their headquarters to teach them how to cook a delicious three-course lunch on a barbecue, including vegetables and even dessert.
And one of those who took part, Deane Smalley, said that the day was a great experience.
“Yeah, it was a fantastic thing to do,” he said.
“Quite a few of us from the team were there, but the food was great, what they put on was brilliant and they gave us some great cooking tips.
“I’m not great myself, I would rather buy a ready meal and have that, but they gave us all some really good advice and tips on barbecue cooking and just general healthy cooking.”
But who was the stand-out chef from the squad?
“I think that would have to be Damian Batt,” he said.
“He loves his cooking and that showed on the day.”
