OXFORD City posted a superb victory in their final match of the season to clinch promotion from Division 2 West of the Southern Men’s League.

City went into the match in fourth place, knowing maximum points were needed, and they did not disappoint.

Ashley Johnson won the A string discus with 40.18m, while Jason Byles’s final throw of 18.42m clinched an excellent victory in the hammer.

The javelin saw A and B string wins for Ian Castle (48.16m) and Johnson (43.14m).

On the track, David Gain maintained his 100 per cent league record with wins in the 100m (11.11 secs) and 200m (22.14).

Nathan Rockett and Manuel Stone recorded personal bests in the A and B string 400m, clocking 58.90 and 1.00.85 respectively.

Johnson produced a storming run in the 110m hurdles, clocking a pb of 15.19 for victory.

Elsewhere on the track, youngsters Ben Upjohn and Ryan Meredith won the A and B string 1500m, Upjohn clocking 4.22.26 and Meredith 4.43.20.

Maximum points were also gained in the 5,000m through Steve Male (16.20.15) and Asghar Ali (19.10.10).

In the jumps, Mark Warland won the A string triple jump with 11.53m, while Johnson’s excellent day continued with a leap of 6.25m landing him the long jump honours.

City rounded off their day with victories in both the 4x100 and 4x400m relays, leaving them with a season’s best score of 125 to finish runners-up and clinch promotion.
