MP SPORTS CHERWELL LEAGUE
Match of the Day
Morning leaders Shipton-under-Wychwood blew a golden opportunity to close in on the Division 1 title when they collapsed to defeat at lowly Oxford 2nd on Saturday.
The points were in their grasp when prolific left arm spinner Shaun Miller took 4-57 to put Oxford under pressure, and then Ryan Newhook bagged 6-36 as the hosts slumped from 152-5 to 164 all out.
Oxford’s stand-in skipper Peter Fuller led by example with a patient 48 from 79 balls.
Shipton were handily placed at 60-2 with their experienced captain Simon Hole and the in-form Tim Senior at the crease.
But Brad Sutherland, who bowled at one end throughout for 7-61, took three wickets in seven balls and the visitors never recovered, eventually falling to 142 all out.
Sutherland claimed the winning wicket by trapping George Seacole leg before.
Shipton’s defeat leaves them 15 points behind Oxford Downs with three matches to play, while Oxford remain in the bottom two.
Oxford play the only team below them – Bourton Vale – next Saturday, and the team immediately above them – Bletchley Town – the week after, so their destiny is in their own hands.
- Oxford 2nd 25pts, Shipton-under-Wychwood 7
