The former Oxford United striker was delighted: “This is a good base to build on,” he said. “Our start to the second half wasn’t great but apart from that, it was an excellent performance.”

Hereford and Crewe are struggling at the foot of the table.

The Bulls were beaten 3-0 at home by Morecambe while the Alex lost to Gillingham.

In the remaining fixture, Terry Gornell’s late equaliser rescued a point for Shrewsbury at Burton.
