Oxford United striker Tom Craddock says he relishing the competition as the battle hots up for a starting place in Saturday’s npower League Two opener away to Rotherham.

Last season, Craddock scored 15 goals, plus two for Luton before he joined the U’s, as he finished two behind top scorer James Constable, and the Darlington-born player wants more this season.

Although he didn’t play in any of their games on their pre-season tour of America due to a knee injury, the 24-year-old returned to action as a substitute in the 1-0 win against MK Dons and played 85 minutes of the 1-0 victory against Everton.

On Monday night, he capped his comeback with a late equaliser as United ended their pre-season friendlies programme with a 1-1 draw at Thame United to stretch their unbeaten run to nine matches.

However, he is under no illusions about how difficult it will be to get into the team, with boss Chris Wilder adding Deane Smalley (from Oldham) and Jon-Paul Pittman (from Wycombe Wanderers) to his striking options during the summer.

Far from fearing the influx, Craddock welcomes the fight for places.

“It’s a challenge,” said the former Middlesbrough trainee. “It’s something you have to look forward to.

“We have got a squad of 20 players and you have to make sure you’re always working hard.

“And if you don’t play well, then you are not going to get a place in the team.

“We’ve got some good players in and it’s going to be an exciting season.”

Meanwhile, Craddock said his battle with Constable to be top of the goalscoring charts had helped sharpen up his finishing.

He added: “It was a friendly competition and James finished top scorer, but it would be great if I could add to what I did last season.

“I do set myself targets, but I keep them to myself.”

During the closed season, Craddock said he had kept himself in shape.

“Over the summer I just like to chill out and keep myself busy in the gym,” he added.

“I enjoy watching the tennis. I played a bit myself, but I’m not that good at it, though it does keep me fit.”
