Headington bowlers hit new heights in the finals of the Oxfordshire championships at Shiplake Village by winning the four main disciplines for the first time.

Mark Charlett took centre stage by regaining his singles title with a 21-15 win over clubmate Colin Whitehead.

Charlett, the 2009 champion, trailed 13-9 after 11 ends, but proved the stronger in the second half of the match to claim victory.

Headington had opened the day with Dean May, Nathan Lewis, Nick Rae-Welsh and Howard Watts capturing the fours crown with an 18-14 win over Carterton’s Sammy Timms, Dave Clanfield, Gordon Walker and Paul Sharman.

Lewis, Rae-Welsh and Watts then teamed up to retain their triples title with a 22-20 win over Carterton’s Stuart Richens, Robbie Clanfield and Baden Sparkes.

Lewis completed a personal hat-trick of titles, winning the pairs championsip with Charlett, beating clubmates John Nicholls and Jason King 26-14.

It was a heroic effort by Lewis, who was having difficulty walking and in pain with gout, having started playing in the fours at 10am and finishing in the pairs at 8.23pm with the triples in between.

Headington were only denied a clean sweep when Gary May went down 21-18 to Carterton’s Darren Wakeman in the under 25 singles final.

All the finalists now go forward to the National Championships at Worthing, which run from August 13-28.

HEADINGTON are away to Worcester on Wednesday for a place in the National Top Club Championship quarter-finals at Worthing.

They reached the last 16 by beating Stony Stratford 4-1 in the area final after defeating Carterton 5-0 in the semi-final.

BANBURY Central qualified for the National Club Mixed Over 60 Double Rink Competition quarter-finals at Worthing on August 27 with a 37-21 home win over Cheltenham.
