ASHLEY Walton clin-ched his third Frilford Heath club championship, despite a jittery finish.

Walton finished three shots clear of Sandy Bolton after rounds of 72, 67 and 75, but had looked totally dominant with nine holes to play of the 54-hole event.

Bogeys on the tenth, 12th and 17th holes saw Walton shoot a final round of three-over-par 75 on the Red Course after nine straight pars, but none of his rivals could overhaul him.

Walton led by three strokes after shooting 139 on the Blue and Green courses, with Bolton on 142 and defending champion Joe Richardson carding 145.

On day two, Luke Williams was the main mover, finishing just a shot off Bolton in third with a total of 219.

Chris Little won the John Fisher Cup for the best nett score over the opening 36 holes, carding 71 and 65 off his six handicap.

Ten-handicapper Steve Baxter impressed with a one-over-par 70 on the Green Course.

Meanwhile, Frilford’s ladies’ championship saw Jane Binning claim a sixth successive title in very wet conditions.

Binning shot 156 over 36 holes to pip Angela Tyreman by two strokes.

Kate Evans won the nett prize on 149, edging out Karen Harris on countback.

Ann Southwell claimed the Bronze Championship with a 27-hole total of 152, ahead of Di Taylor on 166.

Penny Haslam carded the best nett round with 130, while Julie Purcell-Smith won the Frilford Frog with 34 points, on countback from Jeanne Hill.

  • PROFESSIONAL Peter McEvoy and amateur partner Paul Shirley (Old Ford Manor) won the Virgin Atlantic PGA National Pro-am Championship regional final at Frilford Heath after carding an eight-under-par 64.
