OXFORD never recovered from a disastrous start as they crashed to a six-wicket defeat at Welwyn Garden City in Division 1 on Saturday.

Skipper Jason Harrison won the toss and opted to bat first, despite overcast conditions.

And he was soon made to rue that decision as Oxford lost their first three wickets with just five runs on the board.

After 20 overs, Oxford had slumped to 61-7, before Shamilal Mendis and Ian Evans added 68 for the eighth wicket.

Oxford’s final total of 148 all out never looked like being enough, and although the home side lost an early wicket when Jamie Hewitt was caught at slip, Welwyn eased home in the 41st over.
