Nick Colton's kennels featured in a record-breaking night and came away with a handsome £4,500 in prize money at west Yorkshire track Kinsley at this week’s Sky-televised meeting.

The Oxford trainer saw Taranis Rex, owned by Tony McCann and Roley Woodcock, blitz the track record for the the third time to lift the £4,000 Gymcrack Final.

The old track record was beaten twice on the night, before Rex produced a brilliant run that saw him come home nearly six lengths to the good over Witton Bound to reclaim his record with a blistering 27.21secs.

Colton had high hopes for Jolly Poacher (evens fav) in the Kinsley Sprint Final.

But although he suffered bad luck in running to finish fourth, Colton’s other runner, Johnny’s Way, who is under the same ownership, picked up the £500 purse and also claimed a track record of 16.02 to complete a great night.

“It was an excellent night,” he said. “I urged the owners to buy the dogs from Thurles in Ireland after watching them trial.”

Colton also related an amusing story regarding Taranis Rex, who was from a litter of seven with Paddy Hennessy.

There was also an identical dog called Taranis Sam, and when Colton called one of his owners about the dog and advised him to buy it, was left astounded when learning that the owner had bought the pair of them – fearing that as they were identical, he may have come away with the wrong one!
