Richard West hit a rapid half-century as holders Banbury survived a scare to post a five-wicket win at Cropredy in the Bernard Tollett Oxfordshire Cup quarter-finals.

Chasing Cropredy’s 139-6 off 20 overs, Banbury were behind the run rate at 49-2 at halfway following an impressive opening spell by Ed Somerton (1-14).

But then West upped the tempo with 50 off 34 balls, and Banbury arrived at the last over requiring eight runs to win.

Two towering sixes from New Zealander Lance Shaw settled the matter, taking Banbury to 144-5 with three balls to spare.

Earlier, West had taken 3-35 after Cropedy had won the toss and decided to bat, with Joe Fox (42) top-scoring.

Scores: Cropredy 139-6 (20 ovs, J Fox 42, R West 3-35), Banbury 144-5 (19.3 ovs, R West 50).

Tiddington are at home to Aston Rowant tonight, while Oxford visit Shipton-under-Wychwood on Wednesday.

The other quarter-final between Great & Little Tew and Thame Town has yet to be arranged, but it’s hoped it will take place next week.

Cropredy will be joined by Tiddington, Great & Little Tew and Shipton in the new District Cup for the area winners, the draw for which has yet to take place.
