GaryBoyd, from Banbury, made the cut after yesterday’s second round of the Open championship at Royal St George’s Sandwich, but there was misery for Oxfordshire’s other two competitors.

Boyd added a level- par of 70 to his first round 71 for a total of 141, just five shots off the lead held jointly by Northern ireland’s Darren Clarke and former US Open champion Lucas Glover.

But Oxford professional Adam Wootton and Thame amateur Craig Hinton both had second rounds in the eighties to miss the cut.

Indeed Hinton finished last by a long way The 24-year-old, Boyd, who went out in the morning when conditions were less windy, had four birdies – including one at the last hole – and four bogeys to stand in joint 32nd position and guarantee himself a prize of at least £11,000.

Wootton started the day level with Boyd, and had genuine hopes of qualifying for the last two rounds.

But he shot a 12-over par 82 for a total of 153.

It all went wrong at the par-three sixth hole where he dropped four shots with a disastrous seven.

A double-bogey two holes later compounded his misery.

But at least he went home with his biggest ever purse of £2,250.

After his first round 82, Hinton was hoping for better luck yesterday, but suffered even more with a 19-over-par round of 89.

He got off two a horrendous start dropping ten shots in the first four holes of his second round.

Three double bogeys were followed by a quadruple bogey eight at the fourth hole.

He went out in 47 strokes, and after a birdie at the tenth – his only one in 36 holes – he came back in 42 to finish nine shots adrift.
