Every so often in angling, you get a day when everthing goes right – the proverbial ‘red letter day’.

I had mine last week on the Kennet at Aldermaston.

My first three visits resulted in two small barbel and a blank, but last week I fished the stretch again armed with four pints of hemp and six pints of red maggots, baiting up the swim before resting it for a couple of hours.

And when I started fishing, I couldn’t miss. I landed eight barbel, two of them doubles of 10.1.0 and 11.1.0 and I lost two others.

The more bait I threw at them the better it was, with bites coming all the time.

My set-up was 26lb Reflector mainline (12lb diameter) and Drennan 12lb Sinkbraid hooklink tied to a size 12 Pallatrax hook.
