Oxfordshire brothers Richard and Peter Chambers, and Paul Mattick were celebrating after striking gold for Great Britain at the World Cup Regatta in Lucerne, Swit-zerland.

The Chambers’ brothers, who are studying at Brookes University, and Mattick, from Wallingford, were part of the team that won the men’s lightweight four title. Rob Williams, from Maidenhead completed the line-up.

Peter, 21, was a late substitute for the injured Chris Bartley and it was the first time that the two brothers had competed together for Britain.

They were part of Great Britain’s haul of ten medals, which also included four silver and two bronze.

“He’s awesome,” said Richard, 26, of his brother after the one-second victory over Italy.

“He’s a pro. He’s come into a boat that expects to challenge for gold and he’s shown he’s a senior athlete.”

Mattick said: “We didn’t have a great first 250m, but we soon got back on terms and actually won by a decent margin for a lightweight men’s four final.”

In contrast, there was disappointment for the three local women, Lindsey Maguire of Wallingford, Caroline O’Connor of Oxford Brookes and Katie Solesbury (nee Greves) of Oxford in the GB women’s eight.

They were fourth over most of the course behind the expected stars America and Canada and the less expected Netherlands.

Pushes over the second half of the course raised hopes of a bronze for the British, but the Netherlands held on.

Oxford Blue Constantine Louloudis, of Isis – still young, but already with two Henley wins and one Oxford Boat Race success behind him – was entered in a Great Britain B coxless pair and won the B final to finish seventh in the world.

At a younger level, Radley College, Abingdon School and St Edward’s Oxford were successful in Britain’s annual junior 16 match against France on the London Docklands course.

Abingdon’s coxed four won by two lengths, Headington’s girls pair went down by three-quarters of a length and, with the match poised at six wins apiece, the overall trophy rested on the boys eights race.

The composite Radley and St Edward’s crew led from the start and won with aplomb.

Wallingford had a contingent at the Henley Masters regatta and their Masters C quad returned with silverware.
