THE Lord’s dream is over for Shipton-under- Wychwood after a four-wicket defeat at Carew yesterday.

Simon Hole’s side failed to hit the heights of previous rounds as a below-par batting and fielding display saw them bow out in the last 16 to the side from Pembrokeshire.

Having been asked to bat, Shipton made a dreadful start.

Christian Brain, whose runs have been instrumental in Shipton’s success this season, was caught behind off just the third ball of the innings.

When fellow opener Tim Senior and No 4 Steve Bates also fell cheaply, Shipton were deep in trouble at 17-3.

However, Hole and Paul Hemming dug in and shared a 67-run fourth-wicket partnership.

However, 150-4 soon became 165-8 as the middle-order failed to add significant runs.

The big-hitting Jason Hunt added a vital 28 off 22 balls as the visitors tried to up the tempo late on, but Carew were much the happier with Shipton’s total of 193-9 off their 40 overs.

In reply, Carew opener Ian Sefton dominated the early stages.

He was eventually caught by Hunt off the bowling of Brain, but had contributed 38 out of 49 runs when he was the third wicket to fall – and put his side well ahead of the run rate.

But it was a fourth-wicket stand of 111 between Tim Hicks and Tom Richards that proved critical.

The duo took the game away from Shipton with some positive batting, helped by some distinctly average fielding.

Left-arm spinner Shaun Miller removed Richards for 37, and then bowled Rhys Davies for one as Shipton gave themselves hope when the hosts slipped from 160-3 to 161-5.

Andrew Hemming stumped Brian Hall off George Seacole’s bowling to give Carew some nervous moments, but Hicks took charge with an unbeaten 67 to see his side home.

Shipton’s fate was sealed when Hunt bowled five wides with ten balls remaining.
